  •  Oppose Animated GIFs are so last century. We've now got proper digital video formats with enormously richer image quality than a GIF's 256 colour pallete and HD resolution is absolutely the norm (this isn't even SD resolution). Each frame is dreadful to look at, with heavy posterisation. There's generally no way to stop the animation in one's browser, which is extremely annoying when trying to read the web page. There's no way for this image to be reused other than on the web. There's a reason why no professional web page published in the last 10 years contain animated GIFs. Colin (talk) 10:15, 23 September 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Oppose Seriously wonky verticals. If meant to be an artistic perspective rather than accurate, then the composition just doesn't quite work IMO. The structure on the RHS is distracting. Colin (talk) 13:44, 23 September 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Verticals are so wonky as they had to be in a wide angle picture, such as in your own picture File:King's Cross Western Concourse.jpg --Wladyslaw (talk) 14:35, 23 September 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
You know, I never understand the Commons FP style of nominating an unusual picture and not explaining it. What you, as a photographer, were trying to achieve. Explain why it is the way it is, etc. Would save a lot of head scratching sometimes. Ok, the wide-angle effect isn't quite working for me here. But I'm going  Neutral. Colin (talk) 07:55, 24 September 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I understand your opinion and I can try to straighten the verticals. But not in every case this looks good or better than a wide angle. --Wladyslaw (talk) 08:05, 24 September 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Agree. Straightening might not achieve a great result here. I think it is just a matter of taste now. Colin (talk) 09:49, 24 September 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  •  Support Ausgezeichnet. --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 18:28, 23 September 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  •  Oppose nice castle, good image, but not FP for me. Disturbing building in the bottom right corner, not the best lighting (shady on the left, bright areas on the castle) and the image is sky-heavy (himmellastig, too much sky IMHO). The distortions are okay, even if they are disturbing though. --kaʁstn Disk/Cat 19:32, 23 September 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  •  Info This is a partial view of the Gothic frescoes dating back to the year 1400 in St. Agatha Church in Leveste in the Hanover, Lower Saxony, Germany. The whole church is lined with such frescoes. At the time this church had also the function of a newspaper such as the German newspaper today "Bildzeitung". Who stood in church and looked up into the vault realized there people of high society. As a result, came into being for persons of high society the German name "die da oben". Later, the frescoes were painted over with white paint. In 1924, the frescoes were discovered and exposed. Today the frescoes for scientists, film directors, actors and costume designers have a great importance because it is the fashion of 1400 original show. --Michael Gäbler (talk) 16:54, 27 September 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

    •  Comment Perhaps Im missing the point Kleuske, but you have said boring composition, whats boring about a picture of a butterfly spreading its wings so that you can see the wing span in full, the crop is meant to be like that again to see the butterfly in full up close. Space has been left around the butterfly. I have also just seen there is another butterfly up for feature picture nomination which the butterfly is centered the same showing the full wingspan. I have added Location where picture was taken..--Danesman1 (talk) 11:40, 23 September 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

If it is a hybrid, then the file details should provide what its pedigree is. I am not even sure if this is a pet dog, a feral dog, or a wild dog. Snowmanradio (talk) 12:20, 27 September 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
This is a domestic dog mongrel, their parents and grandparents were stray mixed all, I have no knowledge of the origin of their race. The encyclopedic value is relative to the use that can be given in the future. --The Photographer (talk) 16:53, 27 September 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  •  Comment I am sure that the perspective is realistic considering the photograph is taken from quite near to the ground. However, for me, the perspective distorts the shape of the car and makes it look huge. Also, the top of the bonnet is not visible and normally this would be seen by an observer standing near to the car. I think that a encyclopaedic photograph of a car should have normal perspective, so that it does not tend look like and advert. Snowmanradio (talk) 09:20, 28 September 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Composition is not optimal; subject is going out of frame (I think it can be fixed because it seems a cropped image). •  Comment Very good shot of the bird and insects. Suggest you try an almost square crop where the top edge of the branch runs from top-left to bottom-right (1795x1697 when I tried it). That crop eliminates the bottom of the branch, simplifying the scene, and provides a strong geometric form IMO. It would also produce a little more room to the left of the bird than to the right, which I think is helpful given the direction the bird is facing. • I've passed on some suggested fixes to Asitjain. Please note that a 69MP image absolutely does not "need" "denoising" in order to satisfy FP criteria that only "need" a 2MP image. While I agree that denoising should be a fairly easy improvement, I strongly feel such pixel-peeping issues should be politely made as a request/suggestion rather than stated as some kind of requirement. •  Neutral Nice colors and "pop", but the composition looks a bit messy. -- King of ♠ 06:00, 1 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  •  Comment What does "composition looks a bit messy" mean? I really hate to lecture, but... Composition wise, it is a very simple composition, two elements, the table and the carrots. The rule of thirds is followed, one third table, two thirds carrots. So messy composition in my opinion is a wrong term. If anything, it is a very measured, clean composition. On the graphic side, we also have simplicity: color and repetition. That the carrots are in a haphazard pile, well, it is carrots in a market... Now, there is one element that to the observant is relevant... But after all, it is a simple picture of carrots in a market. Can you see the market? --Tomascastelazo (talk) 16:32, 1 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  •  Oppose There's more to "composition" than lining two major elements up on the rule of thirds line. An attractive basket would be better than that migraine-inducing-green box. The random arrangement of carrots has no depth and little to interest the viewer. A basic Google Image search for "carrots" turns up countless examples of more inviting images. Sorry, but this is a long way from feature-worthy IMO. Colin (talk) 17:45, 1 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  •  Comment Of course there is more to composition, the link you provide above should be a must read for anyone evaluating photographs here... Have you? And yes, there are millions of better photos not only in the internet, but stashed away someplace. But this one is here, and it is free. But I do not think I am ready to produce a picture of something in an attractive basket to please the particular taste of anyone. I photograph reality as it presents itself to the world, extracting what I consider relevant. And that migrane-inducing green box is an expression of a particular culture, a particular place, that has much to say to the educated mind. It is like music... to some it is noise, to some it is the metrics of sounds, to others, pleasure... --Tomascastelazo (talk) 18:11, 1 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
...and to others, The Emperor's New Clothes. Sorry, Tomascastelazo, these are carrots, not some deep art that only the highly educated mind can appreciate. Colin (talk) 18:57, 1 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
... one of my favorite stories... you should read it too... Art? Who said anything about art? I never pretended them to be art, just as I said, carrots in market... --Tomascastelazo (talk) 19:06, 1 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  •  Question Why not these ([1], [2], [3]) ways? -- Jkadavoor (Jee) (talk) 06:12, 2 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • Agree. There's a far better "carrots in market" image that could have been made than this uninteresting still-life. The "this one is free" argument is irrelevant. Colin (talk) 08:59, 2 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Of course there can be, and there are better pictures, better photographers, but this has to be one of the silliest arguments to oppose. If we were to apply that criteria to oppose, not one single image in Commons would be featured, for there is always room for improvement. The reality is that this picture is the one up for voting, not some Platonic ideal concocted up in someone´s mind, who has no idea what photography is all about, nor how to judge on photographic and documentary merits. If the lack of quality really bothers someone, they should set the example of quality, and show the world how things are done. Evaluators should at least use universally agreed terminology in photo evaluation, if they know what that is. Also the responsibility for the quality in FPC resides not only on the photograph, good or bad, for I´ve seen extraordinary photography shot down by inadequate, ignorant judging. --Tomascastelazo (talk) 16:59, 2 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Is this nomination just a piss-take, Tomascastelazo? Are you just trolling us? The photo is deeply boring and has unpleasant colours. It completely fails to capture the interest of the viewer, who can't wait to get this luminous arrangement of pixels off their screen. There, that's my reason for opposing. All the rest is just an aside. Colin (talk) 17:08, 2 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • I take my photography and my nominations very seriously, and if you read the thread you are the one who started using inadequate terms in the evaluation, pointing out reasons to oppose that are not within the evaluation criteria and based on your personal taste (which is fine), implying bad quality, bad technique or what have you. To say that the picture is deeply boring for example, is a personal value judgement outside of the criteria. And since you take the effort to evaluate from the wrong parameters in detriment of the spirit of Commons, so I take the effort to point out your lack of objectivity and question your authority to speak on behalf of the viewers. If it is boring for you, so be it, you have a right to your opinion, but I do not recall you being appointed the spokesperson of the community. I speak from my experience, from deeds done, from contributions, whereas I cannot really see where your assumed authoritative knowledge comes from. --Tomascastelazo (talk) 18:58, 2 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  •  Comment The black bag is sanitary control! The picture depicts the products as well as their merchandising... On a street! So the picture has more information than just the representation of products... As C. Wright Mills suggested in his classic "The Sociological Imagination," so here we could use a little of "photographical imagination." This is, after all, an encyclopaedic endeavor, not a beauty contest. --Tomascastelazo (talk) 18:19, 1 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

--Kabelleger (talk) 22:12, 28 September 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The recently uploaded (for WLM 2012) images File:Chand Baori (step-well).JPG and File:Chand Baori (Step-well) at Abhaneri.JPG show 12 levels above the water and are taken from two opposite sides. The latter is a better picture and higher EV than this IMO. That it was only uploaded two weeks ago is probably the main reason it isn't widely used yet. The above nomination appears to be a scan of a photograph and the left-hand-side has serious light-bleed issues, as well as the picture having low overall sharpness/detail for its (barely) 2MP. Yes; I started to rearrange pictures in gallery like this so that people can easily find the best files. Is it good? -- Jkadavoor (Jee) (talk) 15:54, 30 September 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That sort of thing helps. A gallery still doesn't list image dimensions and on the category list all you have to go on is the file size. Different users will have different needs. For web use, the tiny images might be fine. For others, they are just noise. Colin (talk) 17:10, 30 September 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Comment Hey Jkadavoor, thanks a lot for your feedback. How if we looked at this less as an "issue" than as a disagreement about how to do things. I took about 70 exposures, from different angles and with all kinds of different depths of field. After looking at the different shots, I decided that I wanted to go with the f/7.1 than with f/4.0 (as e.g. in this picture) because I wanted the nice bokeh and I also wanted the main parts of the bird to be pin sharp (as in the picture above). So, just to clarify: I'm not challenging your vote. I'm totally fine if you don't like the photo or if you just don't think it should be featured. What I would like to point out is that I would feel much more comfortable if you said: "I see your approach and I don't like it" instead of "there's an issue". Let's just assume that most of the people here know what they're doing and might just have chosen to do it in a specific way – instead of thinking that someone was lacking the technical skills "to get it right" ;-) Best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 18:28, 1 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks Frank for the detailed reply. Yes, DOF and "fine details" are not friends; they always walk in opposite directions. So the only thing we can do is to find the best point in between. I appreciate your selection here (F7.1 at 145mm) but the subject is not well aligned to your camera sensor.; the bill is close and the tail is far. So the bottom of the head is also out of focus. The camera should be well aligned vertically and horizontally to get best results in such works. The “problem” of Tomas’ previous FP seems lack of vertical alignment than horizontal.
The position of the head in the other picture you referred (F4 at 165 mm) is better ; here it turns at you . Please note that DOF changes with change in focal lengh or subject distance. You will get more advice (which are free) if posted at Wikipedia where DOF is more considered than here. BTW, I like your plenty of works including this. :) -- Jkadavoor (Jee) (talk) 06:49, 2 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

A 632 megapixel high-quality digitization of Karl Briullov's famous painting, en:The Last Day of Pompeii, from the Google Art Project. Depicts a panicked scene as a volcano erupts.
  •  Info created by Karl Briullov - uploaded by Dcoetzee - nominated by Dcoetzee. A 632 megapixel high-quality digitization of Karl Briullov's famous painting, The Last Day of Pompeii, from the Google Art Project. Depicts a panicked scene as a volcano erupts. Includes links to a set of 12 tiles for the full 9.3 gigapixel version of the image, providing an extremely high level of detail suitable for creating high-resolution detail images and large wall-sized prints. This version was scaled down to 30,000 pixels wide because that's the largest size Photoshop can handle (and it requires only a reasonable 2.5 GB of RAM to load). -- Dcoetzee (talk) 05:27, 2 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  •  Support -- Superior to existing versions (File:Karl Briullov, The Last Day of Pompeii (1827–1833).jpg is overbrightened). Could use more info in its artwork template. Dcoetzee (talk) 05:27, 2 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  •  Support Very nice, but really hard to load! Indeed Photoshop will load it, but for those without it, I would recommend Irfanview. It automatically resizes it to 15000px, which is still really detailed. Programs I've tried that do not work on my computer with 6 GB RAM: Firefox, Toolserver, Windows Photo Viewer, GIMP (on Linux), EOG (on Linux). -- King of ♠ 06:57, 2 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • FYI I've managed to load it in both GIMP on Windows and Windows Photo Viewer on my comp with 8 GB RAM, although GIMP took a few minutes - not sure why exactly the Linux version didn't work out. Firefox didn't work for me either, nor did MS Paint or JPEGcrop. Dcoetzee (talk) 07:16, 2 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  •  Oppose IMO, we could feature "in block" all the pictures of the "Google art Project", and I don't see the interest for our project. "Commons" needs theses images, yes, but there is no need to feature a picture (taken by a bot) that at least half of us cannot upload on a "normal" browser... This version was scaled down is in contradiction with the guidelines, and it is an interesting paradox... Important for "Commons", agree. Featured Picture, disagree.--Jebulon (talk) 14:51, 2 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • I'm confused - you're objecting that you can't load it but also objecting that it was scaled down? Also it couldn't possibly have not been scaled down, as JPEGs have a maximum resolution of 65536x65536, and in addition the full resolution version was uploaded separately as a tile set. Also very high-resolution bot uploads have been featured before, such as File:The Immaculate Conception, by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, from Prado in Google Earth.jpg (12,988 × 23,867). Would it be perhaps helpful to upload a (further) scaled down version separately for people who are unable to open this one? Dcoetzee (talk) 17:40, 2 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
      • Can you upload maximum resolution version in TIFF or XCF ? --Sasha Krotov (talk) 13:14, 3 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
        • The maximum resolution TIFF would be about 18 gigabytes in size, and is far too large to upload or to manipulate using any existing software (the image would require about 37 GB of RAM to decode with 32 bpp, which most home PCs don't have). (Moreover the original TIFF is not lossless, but rather is assembled from Google's JPEG tiles, so JPEG artifacts are already present in it.) Right now I think Category:Tile set of The Last Day of Pompeii provides the best way to access the full resolution version. Dcoetzee (talk) 20:14, 3 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  •  Support -- The helical seed heads of the great willowherb make for interesting macros. The shallow depth-of-focus was a deliberate choice, but may not be to everyone's taste of course. I took some shots with a greater depth-of-focus but the result was messier and paradoxically resulted in less depth information (near, middle and far all in focus). With the first image, for example, the focus is specifically on the inner string of seeds, and the fact that the outer seeds are far out-of-focus means one can distinguish this inner group. Colin (talk) 18:59, 30 September 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The link you gave was Wikipedia FP, not Commons. See Commons:Featured pictures/Plants/Flowers#Posters for four Commons image "collages", as you call them (including the two poppies I linked above). Wikipedia is a publisher, not an image resource, and a gallery on WP can achieve the same effect with the three individual images (which are also uploaded and linked from the set). Also, Wikipedia has the concept of a FP Set. See Featured Picture Set. This is not Wikipedia. If somone can indicate that Commons also has the concept of a "Featured Picture Set" consisting of individual images, then I could nominate as that. As for the "abstract" issue, all macro shots look unusual to a degree. That nature can also have an abstract appeal is one of the attractions of macro photography. This is exactly what those seed heads look like up close. That's why I photographed them. See Commons:Featured pictures/Objects#Others for loads of FPs that have abstract qualities to varying degrees. They are all very much real. Colin (talk) 07:56, 1 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes; Commons also has the concept of Featured Picture Set: "If a group of images are thematically connected in a direct and obvious way, they can be nominated together as a set." You can read more instructions under "set nominations" under "Guidelines for nominators" at the top of this page. But unfortunately I can't see any examples. And all the examples of "image collages" that you showed are from the same user and not very useful in my humble opinion. -- Jkadavoor (Jee) (talk) 09:09, 1 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I didn't see that bit, thanks. I also have failed to find any nominations, let alone sucessful candidates. A search turned up Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Cochlearius cochlearius stages.jpg ironically :-). Colin (talk) 09:48, 1 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  •  Comment It has been suggested these are nominated as a "featured picture set". So I've done this as an alternative choice below. I still think the above has merit of its own as an example of a photographic trypych: three photographs on a theme. Colin (talk) 09:48, 1 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

A piece of public art on the plaza outside Warwick Arts Centre
  •  Question Is it necessary to have the authors name in the file name? This name could be confused with the sculptor of the cone-shaped statue. Presumably "Steve Walton IMG" could be removed from the file name. Snowmanradio (talk) 12:44, 8 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  •  Comment I think that the image description on commons is inadequate, since it dose not mention the cone-shaped statue, which is prominent in the foreground. I think that it would be reasonable to include the name of the sculptor. Snowmanradio (talk) 12:44, 8 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  •  Comment The original image size was 4,575 × 3,047 (1.34 MB), as seen in the file history of File:WTC Steve Walton IMG 9613WarwickArtsCentre.jpg. The size was increased to 5.83 MB when it was brightened and this image is over the original image. The version of the image presented for a FP is 6.27 MB. Presumably, the compression is needlessly expanded and is taking up unnecessary computing capacity and energy. Snowmanradio (talk) 12:57, 8 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

SHORT DESCRIPTION
  •  Comment I didn't want to compare my picture with others. All my pictures show the life in real nature. And it is not simple to make such pictures in the wild. For me the quality is good. The poeple should decide without your competition thinking. (correction necessary, because I thought the picture in your link was from you - a mistake). However, the picture in your link isn't better than mine I find, just different. Hockei (talk) 18:14, 6 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • I too happy if people promote my works without proper reviews. But "our main goal is to feature most valuable pictures from all others". How can I find the most valuable without comparing the images available in the same category? I came to know form my little experience that making such pictures in the wild is very difficult. But my comparison was with same situation and same subject. Correct me if I'm wrong. (It seems a provoking argument from an experienced user so I checked your stream. Is this your first nomination?) -- Jkadavoor (Jee) (talk) 05:43, 7 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  •  Oppose Too much distraction from plant and empty space. The image Jkadavoor links is a simpler composition with less distraction. I suggest this image can be improved with a square crop that has the diagonal position of the butterflies approximately crossing the diagonal of the frame. The crop I suggest takes a little off the top (reduce the gap above the butterfly in half) but nothing from the bottom (to retain the whole of that spiky white seed. Then crop left and right to form a 1:1 ratio with equal gap before the antennae on the left and wings on the right. The focus, to me, seems acceptable. Colin (talk) 15:16, 7 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Thanks. My picturs are all made in format 16:9 and I don't want to cut them so it is good to use as background image or in modern TV's and so on. When anybody like my picture and wants to use it for another purpose who can cut or crop it as he wants. There is another version of this butterflies who was they sitting on a rosehip. Maybe you find it better but I decided me for this. For me this thistles make the picture on closer inspection more interesting. This is a matter of opinion. •  Oppose I don't find the noise in the sky objectionable, but the image as a whole is unsharp. (We should be having pretty high standards for 5 MP images at 100% resolution.) The grass looks like green carpet. -- King of ♠ 09:04, 11 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  •  Info I would agree that this image is relatively unsharp, as it was taken with a handheld camera, but this image has been assessed as a Quality Image. Even so, perhaps a previous assements count for nothing or is not relevant in the context of the current assessment. --Gavin Collins (talk) 10:00, 11 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Personally my sharpness standards are higher for FPC than QIC. Let's say the same unsharp 10 MP image is submitted for both. I would oppose at FPC unless it's really really good, but at QIC I would look at a 2 MP thumbnail and if it's sharp, it's OK for me. Also, if a 2-3 MP landscape (even if sharp) is submitted at FPC, there is a good chance I may not support due to low res. -- King of ♠ 02:34, 12 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  •  Oppose Best commons has to offer? I'm missing wow. This is a bridge and some industrial buildings...  B.p. 08:02, 12 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • For some people a bridge never will have a wow because it's a bridge. But is this the best argument against this picture you can offer? --Wladyslaw (talk) 11:54, 12 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  •  Support Comment The "wow" or "not wow" factor is something very personal, and therefore cannot be discussed (De gustibus et coloribus non disputandum). So, an "oppose" vote for this reason is of course acceptable, as usual. Nevertheless, there is no need of contemptuous comments, and nobody (IMO) can say that this pic, showing "a bridge and some industrial buildings", yes, has no value. It has a great educational value in contrary, in many fields of study. Furthermore, the overall technical quality seems quite featurable to me. I think it meets the FP criteria. ...two times this week I support Wladyslaw's pictures in FPC, is it scary for my health ?? •  Oppose Bad view (shadow side, bridge covers less than 10% of the pixels). Content: Can't SEE the special thing about the bridge. -- Oliver Rode 02:51, 16 October 2012 (UTC)
The bridge itself has nothing special (where did I write this?). The bridge is placed in a attentive way in the environment. And to show this you have to show also the surrounding. The shadows makes the view very vividly, I don't see a part that is disturbed by the shadow. --Wladyslaw (talk) 04:55, 16 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I doubt whether the above vote is after "log in". -- Jkadavoor (Jee) (talk) 05:02, 16 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I don't.  B.p. 09:50, 16 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
-- some clearification. You have done the best you can do from the place at the time you took it. But one thing is, i think the bridge would look better, if the photo had been taken at a time where the shadow is behind the bridge and not in front of it. The second point is about that the bridge should dominate the picture, not the environment; so i would like to see more croping at the left part, where a second street is. 3rd: The length of the "long" bridge is not very impressive because of the acute angle. -- Oliver Rode 13:21, 16 October 2012 (UTC)
(1) Because of the position of the bridge (going west to east) your wish will never be satisfiable. The sun raised long before there is a chance for this shadowing. (2) If a object should be dominant or not is the decision of the photographer. First there is a practical reason for this shot, you will never be able to make a very dominant view at this bridge without having environment. In this version File:Lörrach - Wiesentalbrücke6.jpg you see the bridge dominant, but I think the composition is not better. Second: the bridge is IMO only interesting with its surrounding. If you don't like it, so okay, can't change it. (3) look at (2), to give a idea of the bridges length you are only able to make an aerial shot. --Wladyslaw (talk) 18:57, 16 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

This fly was very busy flying here and there, I find it difficult to capture it. I've capture it positioning the camera in the same level as the fly, I think that is why some parts are partially obscured by wing. I've uploaded another version giving some room to the right. Sadly no chance to retake it :( --JDP90 (talk) 07:18, 15 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
An unfocused wing blade points to the lens is not good; moving the camera a little left or right and top or bottom will help (next time). I know how difficult to capture a dragonfly from a side due to the wing depth. But I always prefer a side view than a dorsal view. So  Support. It’s OK for the new upload with more lead room. -- Jkadavoor (Jee) (talk) 08:52, 15 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

    • If it weren't for he two guys toking (something illegal?) in front of the building, i would have called it booooring. It's a good image, but all in all too dull for FP. Kleuske (talk) 11:30, 8 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
      • Agree, you are right, this building (the whole, not only what is shown here, which is the less "boring" part), is "boring". In some way, it was the wish of the builder (please take a few minutes in following the links...). No, it is not too dull for FP (UNESCO World Heritage, something cultural, if you know what I mean...). You understood very well the purpose of this nomination, but you finished too quickly with just the wrong conclusion.--Jebulon (talk) 14:13, 8 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
        • My comments were a bit harsh, and i apologize to you, the Jezuites, UNESCO and all things cultural. The image is certainly a good one, i've said that. QI? No doubt. FP? Close, but no cigar. Kleuske (talk) 15:47, 8 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  •  Question Are you talking about this building? Sometimes details are not interested as the whole view (if I'm right). -- Jkadavoor (Jee) (talk) 16:18, 8 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • Maybe, if you are right. Maybe not, if you are wrong. I was there: it is really boring, or "cold", in any case. That's what I wanted to show. As for the picture you used, it is a little bit too small for a FP nomination...--Jebulon (talk) 19:05, 8 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
      • No; I just asked whether they are same building. And I said that the whole view is more interesting to me if they are same. :) -- Jkadavoor (Jee) (talk) 06:05, 9 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  •  Support As I know this building, I can tell it's a great view of the main part of the facade. It looks to me perfect in symmetry and light, almost an illustration. The building itself is very simple as seen from the street, big but without many ornaments. I think this composition combines very well with the building's style. I wish the two guys weren't there, but on the other hand they can give scale. It's also interesting that there's nobody else in the square, because there are usually lots of tourists or just people going for a walk (the area of square covered by the picture is about 50mx50m). If somebody could remove properly those two guys, it'd be perfect IMO. --Kadellar (talk) 19:35, 8 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It is easy, I could do this. But are you sure it will make the picture better ?--Jebulon (talk) 19:42, 8 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  •  Support Usually, I'd agree with removing the two people. I'm less certain here as the scale of the building is hard to judge without any reference (e.g., plants, trees, people, cars). That front door is pretty large. Btw, have you saved with a decent quality setting -- there's some blocky artefacts and gnats in the sky round the building. Colin (talk) 19:07, 10 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  •  Support Two thinks makes this picture featureable IMO: the strong symmetry of this picture supports the architectural character of the building front, the structure makes the image interesting and attentive. The intense blue gives a good contrast to the gray of the roof and the achromatic facade. Congratulation to this picture. --Wladyslaw (talk) 20:41, 11 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

These types of pictures are taken with the help of "extended zoom" facility of my poor camera which is somewhat similar to the use of a TC in SLR. It is easy to compose an image having 10MP in my camera; but the result will very bad, without much details. Instead I tight the frame with help of that feature and compose giving full strain to my eyes. You can imagine how difficult it is to keep the entire subject in frame in such a tight shot. • Yes, Common is not Wikipedia; but both are part of Wikimedia. A perfect work is appreciated in both places. But if a compromise is in need, Commons compromises on EV whereas Wikipedia compromises on Wow/quality (IMHO). -- Jkadavoor (Jee) (talk) 05:35, 5 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Never forget this, my friends: there IS no Wikipedia. There ARE different WikipediaS, with different rules and ways. For instance, there is not FP "contest" in the french WP (and I think it is good, IMO...). So as for for me, there is no comparison possible. Remember that for a lot of people here, only "Commons" is international...--Jebulon (talk) 20:43, 7 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Highspeed 6 ferry landing at Santorini (Athinios port).
Ok. I got confused about the rotation at first, too. You have to check both the horizon (line between water and rocks, should be almost perfectly horizontal as it's very far away, visible in overlapping regions of different rocks at different distances) and the chimney of the ferry. The left end of the ferry seems to not be perfectly upright, so that doesn't work as a reference and confuses the eye (mine, at least). --Julian H. (talk/files) 20:59, 12 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Comment I think desaturating/reducing the green, maybe also in his face, would have a positive effect on the whole image. --Julian H. (talk/files) 21:04, 11 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  •  Comment Not only desaturating the green, I think the whole image is too green. I would push the WB +10 magenta in Photoshop. -- King of ♠ 02:23, 12 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That would not help, as the lit parts are already way too far in the magenta-range. I think the version on the right would, in theory, be the correct tone, although that makes him look very pale. It's actually WB -20 towards green now.

  •  Support This is without a doubt one of the finest CC0 licences I've seen. The balance of grey background, white inset and black and blue writing is beautifully executed. I love the little logo on the left: two circles of harmony. The text is crisp and the wording professional, friendly and easy to understand. There's a small amount of CA (calligraphic aberration) inside the zero that I think is due to a poor choice of font, but it isn't distracting and a careful application of Adobe Eraser should eliminate it. I do recommend, Jkadavoor, that you consider switching from Panasonic stationary to Sony for your licence work. Their marker pens aren't the best, I'll grant you, but you'll gain access to a fine selection of Zeiss automatic pencils, if you can afford them. Lastly I must note that the licence isn't big enough to cover the hole in my bathroom. You should know by now our disdain for downsampling licences and urge you to consider uploading a higher resolution one. -- Colin (talk) 20:43, 11 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

As you seem to be the only one to see a posterized sky you can mark the parts that should be so? Maybe you can explain to us why the background of this picture File:Common Jezebel Delias eucharis by kadavoor 3.jpg ist better than this one. I'm very curious if we actually get an answer and if this is comprehensible. --Wladyslaw (talk) 13:34, 14 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

May I advise you not to assume what I can do? It is not healthy. Better fix this image: the FPC guidelines hint that the image has to have adequate quality...  B.p. 22:57, 16 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Instead to bully you could answer my determined question. The image has adequate quality, was elected for QI. You are not giving an answerer despite of my request. •  Comment I'm expressing the same anxiety about the possibility for the misuse of photos of children and young if contributed on Commons as earlier in the QIC page. There are exceptions like to describe different cultures around the world. (Just my views)-- Jkadavoor (Jee) (talk) 05:32, 16 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • I usually employ the Grandma-test. If I can't send it to Grandma as a nice picture of her grandchildren, i don't take it (let alone post it). This one passes with flying colours. Let's not go crazy. Kleuske (talk) 09:13, 16 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
      •  Comment I think that the notice in the image description indicating that the parents' of the children gave permission for the photograph to be issued with a CC licence is important, because the boys do not look old enough to give informed consent themselves. Snowmanradio (talk) 17:15, 17 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
These children are my nephew and my brother. His parents have been informed in detail. --The Photographer (talk) 20:21, 17 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I feel more danger in such "permissions". What we can do if somebody post this picture on a gay site with "proper" captions. Just sharing my anxieties. -- Jkadavoor (Jee) (talk) 06:39, 18 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
As I said, let's not go crazy. If the image appears on a gay site, it's still a quite innocent image of two boys and a dog. But I guess with gay you mean pedophile. Even in that case, it's just two boys and a dog. Whatever the caption. Kleuske (talk) 08:17, 19 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  •  Question I do not understand the title of the file, "Boys in the river of Venezuela", because the boys are not in a river and I see no water. Has there been a translation error? Snowmanradio (talk) 17:23, 17 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It should add the word bank --The Photographer (talk) 17:27, 17 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  •  Question Please improve the image description to increase any encyclopaedic value that the image might have. Please describe the location in words better. Are the two boys brothers? Are we to assume that these are local boys or are they tourists? If the geolocation is accurate, it indicates that there is a reservoir in the locality, so what is the relevance of this? Are the boys on the bank of a reservoir? Snowmanradio (talk) 18:29, 17 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

    •  Question -- The sunlight (dusk) with shadows is part of the image composition, see cloudy sky image (the putti arn't that bright). Isn't this "best pratice" for outdoor photography ? The picture is taken at 15MP and not down-scaled (see guide); Shouldn't artifacts be inspected under the 2MP criteria ? -- Oliver (talk) 07:30, 21 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
--kaʁstn Disk/Cat 21:27, 23 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

We work in the virtual world of the diffusion. But here it happened something new. One of us has to give a public collection specimens through COMMONS. If we needed proof of the usefulness of our work it is. This approach surprised academia. Institutions currently looking to work with caution. Continue to make quality stuff and we will be better received by the public collections and Universities. --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 16:36, 17 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Swing pass in rugby union
  •  Info c/u/n by --PierreSelim (talk) 08:44, 16 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  •  Comment On the picture Timoci Matanavu is warming up before a Heinken Cup match, here performs a swing pass. A swing pass in rugby union is a short/medium pass perfomed with a swing move from the arms - it's a bit less impressive than the overused spiral pass but very efficient at short distances. The bottom crop on the picture is imposed by the position of the advertisement panels around the field.

  •  Comment -- too much dam (excuse the pun) distractions with overpowering trees on either side of the mill, a tree in front of the mill, & a branch popping out on the right. The clouds are also a bit too overpowering of such a small subject matter.Fotoriety (talk) 22:31, 21 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  •  Comment I think the picture is significantly improved by cropping out what is to the left of the left tree. The blue steel of the bridge and the lamppost and the weeds at the front next to the pavement are all ugly distractions. -- Colin (talk) 12:08, 22 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Traditionally Eastern Slavic cookies spring zhavoronki

  •  InfoTraditionally Eastern Slavic cookies zhavoronki (translated as larks) or soroki (translated as magpies). This cookies baked on the day of the march equinox, which in pagan times was celebrated as the beginning of spring. Bread birds given to children who run in the field to call the returning birds. In the Orthodox Christian tradition, the ceremony has been associated with the celebration of Holy Forty Day, and eastern slavic sorok (translated as forty) has been associated with soroka (translated as magpie}, which is not a migratory bird. The photo was taken in the ecovillage of Korenskie Rodniki, Shebekinsky District. This info dedicated to Tomascastelazo :) Ю. Данилевский (talk) 13:38, 21 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  •  Comment I see you've uploaded several images, including of ones that are roosting in the trees. Are trees normal habitat for them or does one tend to find them only on the ground in the field? You see, I think I prefer File:Lob_Жаворонки_74.JPG. Could you indicate if this is the male or female of the species. Thanks :-)
