Comment The image has been selectively cleaned to remove the reddish spots. Much care has been applied to avoid losing drawing lines, and, in any case, this has been carefully documented: in the description of the image it is clearly indicated where is :the non-cleaned image. The cleaned image has two scopes: to illustrate Camillo Benso, Conte di Cavour, one of the oustanding personalities of Italian history; and, thanks to the sharpness and high resolution of the image, to document the finest details of the engraving art. Oppose -- The colours of the blue sea, green grass and black chair work well. However, the composition is poor: the whole picture needs shifted to the right, and possibly the camera position rotated a bit. The right-facing chair demands it be placed in the far left of the frame, because the viewer will look to where it faces and end up out of the picture. The mountains in the left third aren't as impressive, so could be eliminated without loss. The black patch (burnt grass? tarmac?) on the left is off-putting. There is significant haze in the distance, removing definition from the mountains. A portrait crop of the right-hand-side, to include all the near high mountains, works better as a composition, but would still benefit from the chair being further left. Comment I really like the subject, but on the right side there is a large area which is way too bright and has absolutely no texture left. Do you have a RAW file? I think this could be fixed using different settings (you could try lower exposure and some fill light to get the water back). Support I am fond of the style. For this time period, it is not easy to find anything sharp, so to speak. The image in this photo is actually quite ornate and detailed, far more than most I have ever seen. I agree that the file name should be changed from Mad to something else, maybe Median. It is because (I think) of the negative connotations of the word "mad" in the English language. However, I confess, I don't know how to accomplish changing the file name! I was trying to figure it out for one of my own uploaded images, with no success! One more reason to include this image: It is well-documented. Info The Common Jezebel (Delias eucharis) is a medium sized pierid butterfly found in many areas of South and Southeast Asia. The butterfly may be found wherever there are trees, even in towns and cities, flies high among the trees and comes lower down only to feed on nectar in flowers. It rests with its wings closed exhibiting the brilliantly coloured underside. Due to this habit apparently, it has evolved a dull upper-side and a brilliant underside so that birds below it recognise it immediately while in flight and at rest. I think it is promotional, propaganda is such a flavoured word, which depends much on personal preferences. The too much issue I have about it, is how the promotional aspect is exaggerated with the huge flag. It is too obviously promotional for my taste. There is not any kind of subtlety, discreteness or balance in it IMO. But I have no problem that others have different opinions. On the other hand one can say it is very honest. One cannot say that the US Navy is trying to hide any objectives by releasing it under a free license. Yes; But I didn't understand what you mean. (The underside is white with a series of dark brown to black marginal spots and a post-discal series of disjoint striae. On the hindwing there is a prominent black spot in space 7 near the costa and a much smaller black spot in space 1a.) This is a shadow loving butterfly active only in the evening or cloudy days. And this is a 'in vivo' shot taken in natural lights scattered from the plants around. For real colors, please refer a collected specimen (In vitro) or a museum specimen. Neutral Good colors, light and timing, but not quite sharp enough at front (albeit it is a difficult shot), and resolution on the low side. Has wow. Foreground elements are also a little distracting. I will not oppose it due to the technical issues, as I have not enough knowledge about the diffulty of these panning shots. My camera has a 35x zoom, however, this photo was taken very close. I spent several hours camouflaged in the foliage. The bird began to watch me watching but did not understand and leave me to take that photo. I live in a third world country, previously had a $ 34 camera, however, I gathered for 9 months to buy this camera, that way to upload good quality photos to commons, however, is not enough. Buy this camera living in a third world country like Venezuela gathering means 9 months 70% of salary, if this image is not elected, I will dedicate to draw instead of taking pictures, it is simply impossible to buy a DSLR camera for a person who lives here. I was really upset.. because I paid 200 rupes (last March) and then I tried to shot some scenes with video.. and some people came and told me that I have to pay another 200 rupes because I have 2 cameras!!! ;-) For example in Ahmedabad or Faterhpur Sikri there are amazing mosques with no charges.. Comment -- I was not refering specifically to any of my pictures, even less to the one you mention, but to the overall quality of our FP gallery of hoverflies (check, for example this one pic). As for the use of the available DOF, I really think that the eyes should always be on focus and shown with the maximum possible detail (on this, I share the opinion of some experts writting about macrophotography of insects). Exactly. That is what I expressed as a second thought above. My earlier comparison was because they are pictures of same subject with different sex; but later I noticed it was taken at Dec 2007. I think I apologized too. See the word "sorry" there. (There may be a language problem in my words.)
DOF is a different argument. Pictures with focus only on the eyes are highly appreciated in sites like Flickr but I don't prefer it unless we have presented them as a set to highlight different parts as different views. Info The Psyche (Leptosia nina) is a small butterfly of the family Pieridae (The Sulphurs, Yellows and Whites) and is found in Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent. The upper forewing has a black spot on a mainly white background. The flight is weak and erratic and the body of the butterfly bobs up and down as it beats its wings. Info The "dead man's fingers" grows on the ground, the plant with the leaf grows in the background. I needed aperture40 to show all tiny details smaller than 1 mm in the different fingers, therefore I got no bokeh in the background and the leaf is visible. But the leaf shows the tiny size by the "dead man's fingers". Visible of the "dead man's fingers" is only the hand (or head) in a large enlargement. This shows not only the crankshaft, pistons and connecting rods, but also the camshaft and valves. The only downside I see is that at this resolution it is necessary to click on the image in the info pane to actually see it move. From what I've read, that is an issue with the wiki software rather than the image itself, however.
